1.6. Deleting or Removing a Web Application

At some point, you might no longer need a particular Web application, or it might be replaced by another one, and you will need to remove the existing Web application. There are two options available for configuring a Web application to no longer be available: you can either remove it or delete it.

  • Remove SharePoint From IIS Web Site This action allows you to unextend the Web application and remove SharePoint Services from using the Web application in IIS. The Web application itself is not deleted and can still be used for reprovisioning a new site collection at any time.

  • Delete Web Application This option allows you to delete the Web application as well as the databases associated with the Web application. This completely removes all references to the Web application from your SharePoint farm, including all the content the Web application was hosting.

Note:

Back up the content databases before you delete a Web application in case you need to recover any data stored in the databases at a later time.

1.7. General Settings

The General Settings option on the Web Applications Ribbon lets you manage different aspects of the Web application. You will find the following six options on the drop-down list when you click the General Settings icon on the Ribbon. Each of these will be discussed in more detail in the following sections.

  • General Settings

  • Resource Throttling

  • Workflow

  • Outgoing E-mail

  • Mobile Account

  • SharePoint Designer

1.7.1. General Settings

Table 3 provides a list of explanations of the different general settings you can configure for each Web application. These configurations are applicable to all site collections accessed by the Web application.

Table 3. Web Application General Settings
PROPERTY NAMEDESCRIPTION
Default Time ZoneAll sites created on all Web applications take the time zone from the farm’s global settings. With this setting, you can change the default time zone for all sites created on a specific Web application.
Default Quota TemplateAllows you to create and assign a specific database quota limit on the total amount of content allowed to be stored for all site collections associated with a Web application. Multiple quota templates can be created and used by different Web applications.
Person Name Actions and Presence SettingsWhen users browse a site, they can see details of the online status of other users with instant messenger clients. If you prefer not to make this information available, you can disable the option. By default it is enabled for all Web applications.
AlertsBy default, alerts are enabled that allow users to create their own alerts on all sites they have access to on the specific Web application. You can also limit the number of alerts a user can set up. By default, this is set to 500 alerts per user.
RSS SettingsAn RSS feed allows users to subscribe to lists and libraries in sites. To allow RSS feeds from lists and libraries, this option must be enabled. The default setting is enabled.
Blog API SettingsEnables you to turn off the Blog API, or alternatively, if you choose to keep it enabled, it can be set to allow user name and passwords to be sent via the Blog API.
Browser File HandlingIndicates whether security headers are included in documents displayed in Web browsers. If you select the Permissive setting, no headers are added. If you select the Strict setting, security headers are included in the documents and security is improved by disallowing automatic execution of Web content.
Web Page Security ValidationWhen a session has been established to the sites, the session will cease automatically if it has been idle for the specified amount of time, which by default is 30 minutes. If a user tries to access the page after it has been idle for the set amount of time, she will have to refresh the page or re-establish the connection.
Send User Name and Password in E-mailAllows administrators to create or change a user’s details in the site and have the new details e-mailed to the user. For additional security, you could choose to disable this functionality.
Master Page Settings for Application _Layouts PagesIndicates whether the pages in the _Layouts folder are allowed to reference site master pages.
Recycle BinThe Recycle Bin allows administrators in site and site collections to restore deleted items from lists and libraries. You can specify how long these items are stored in the Recycle Bin in their site and also how long the items remain in the site collection’s Recycle Bin. The site collection Recycle Bin is a second-level Recycle Bin that captures all deleted content from site Recycle Bins.
Maximum Upload SizeFixes the size of content that users can upload to a site in any single procedure. By default, this is 50 MB, and any file or group of files that a user tries to upload above this limit is rejected.

1.7.2. Resource Throttling

SharePoint 2010 introduces the option to manage your SharePoint performance by specifying list view thresholds that control how much information can be involved in a database operation. These configuration settings will help optimize SharePoint by limiting the number of items that SharePoint handles during a single operation. Table 4 provides a list of settings and an explanation of these settings used to manage list resources.

Table 4. Web Application Resource Throttling Settings
PROPERTY NAMEDESCRIPTION
List View ThresholdSpecifies maximum number of items a database operation can involve at one time. The default setting is 5000.
Object Model OverrideThe default setting is to allow individuals with sufficient permissions to override the list view threshold programmatically.
List View Threshold for Auditors and AdministratorsSpecifies maximum number of items a database operation can involve at one time for users who have been granted sufficient permissions. The default setting is 20000.
List View Lookup ThresholdSpecifies the number of Lookup, Person/Group, or workflow status fields that a database query can involve in one operation. The default setting is 6.
Daily Time Window for Large QueriesSpecifies the time when queries that exceed the thresholds can be executed. This setting usually designates hours outside of normal working hours. This is disabled by default.
List Unique Permissions ThresholdSpecifies the maximum number of unique permissions a list can have at one time. The default setting is 50000.
Backward-Compatible Event HandlersBy default, event handlers are off, so users cannot use an event handler operation for a document library.
HTTP Request Monitoring and ThrottlingControls whether the HTTP request throttling jobs are active or turned off. This option is enabled by default.
Change logAfter 60 days, entries are deleted from the change log. You can change the length of time in days or set it to never delete entries.
